Note sur l’origine de l’expression «Tiers Monde» par Alfred Sauvy:
En 1951, j’ai, dans une revue brésilienne, parlé de trois mondes, sans employer toutefois l’expression «Tiers Monde». Cette expression, je l’ai créée et employée pour la première fois par écrit dans l’hebdomadaire français «l’Observateur» du 14 août 1952. L’article se terminait ainsi : «car enfin, ce Tiers Monde ignoré, exploité, méprisé comme le Tiers Etat, veut lui aussi, être quelque chose». Je transposais ainsi la fameuse phrase de Sieyes sur le Tiers Etat pendant la Révolution française. Je n’ai pas ajouté (mais j’ai parfois dit, en boutade) que l’on pourrait assimiler le monde capitaliste à la noblesse et le monde communiste au clergé.

Nous parlons volontiers des deux mondes en présence, de leur guerre possible, de leur coexistence, etc., oubliant trop souvent qu’il en existe un troisième, le plus important, et en somme, le premier dans la chronologie. C’est l’ensemble de ceux que l’on appelle, en style Nations Unies, les pays sous-développés.

Jai Bhim is a cheerful greeting. Ten million Indians greet each other in this manner. They’re the Dalits who are a proud community. They inherited an extremely difficult life. Their parents and grandparents and untold generations before them were outcasts in society. Even today they still encounter prejudice and experience helplessness.
For more than a millenium their ancestors lived as outcasts. People had a horror of touching them. Others even avoided being in their proximity as their shadow was considered polluting. If they went to school they were seated separately, If they were able to obtain work they did the dirtiest and lowest paid jobs.
With their greeting of Jai Bhím they remind each other of their own successful revolution in 1956 for their human rights. Their cause is sacred. It inspires us here in Hungary, as we also face segregation and prejudice today. We would like to know discrimination is a thing of the past.
The dalit’s story is like a fairy tale.
